Welcome to our RMS Saxonia
website. With
a long and varied career, the Saxonia was a most remarkable ship. The
Saxonia
was built in 1954 for Cunard Line's Dominion service to Canada as the
first of the Saxonia Sisters quartet. She was also the first Cunard
ship fitted with Denny-Brown stablisers from new. In
1962 she was rebuilt and
restyled to make her more suitable for cruising and was renamed
Carmania. At this time she was also repainted in Cunard Line's
cruising green livery like the famous RMS Caronia - the Green Goddess. After her time with Cunard she then went on to have a varied career in the Soviet Union's Black Sea Shipping Company fleet. She finally was scrapped in Alang, India in 2000. This website celebrates the history of
this pioneering ship and honours its unique place in maritime history
in the story of Cunard Line's Dominion service to Canada and ocean
travel in the mid to late 20th century. |
