Welcome to our Queen
Elizabeth website. This website is part of our Cunard Queens website
celebrating
these renowned ocean liners. On the 10th October
2007, Cunard Line made the surprise announcement that it was ordering
another Cunard Queen. This new ship, like the new Queen Victoria, would
also be built by Fincantieri
S.p.A., Marghera, Venice, Italy and it
would enter service in 2010. So despite the retirement of the QE2, soon
Cunard Line will have a trio of
Cunard Queens in service at the same time once again! The name
provisionally suggested for the new Cunarder is Queen Elizabeth in
honour of the first Queen Elizabeth. But
this proposed name we feel will cause difficulties and lead to
confusion. We already have had one
ship named in honour of this first Queen Elizabeth and this was the QE2
so technically it would be the third
ship of that name and so should be Queen Elizabeth 3 really. The
original Queen Elizabeth is renowned as the only Cunarder with that
name and so introducing another Cunarder with the identical name is
confusing. If she was to be a "Queen Elizabeth" to not call her QE3
would make a mockery of Cunard Line's ship naming policy and the
reasoning behind the QE2's name. Some observers have suggested that a more appropriate name for the new Cunarder, following on from Queen Victoria, might be Queen Alexandra as this is the only 20th century "Queen" not yet honoured with a Cunard Queen named after her. So come on Cunard Line, why not have a Queen Alexandra instead? |
